Listen to your instinct and the rest will follow

Varkala is a fishing village based on a holy spiritual earth foundation with beautiful beaches, majestic cliff view and incredible sunsets. Best known for its mellow, ayurveda, ashram, yoga, seafood and beach holidays, people come here to connect with themselves and nature. Most restaurants and bars will close around midnight; alcohol is illegal but will be available everywhere managed by legal corruption. Varkala is not Goa, rainbow drugs and rave parties are not part of the scene, you will be disappointed if you are coming for such pleasures.

Be conscious you are in India and not Ibiza, public nudity and sexuality is not part of Indian culture especially in remote paradise villages. Women travelers use common sense when traveling alone. Dress decently when visiting local towns, restaurants, temples and streets like anywhere in the world. On the beach free your heavenly body and sun worship; you are of course on holiday.

If you have 2 – 3 weeks in India, need to rest from daily stress and burdens. Take it easy, slow down, it requires at least 7 days adjusting to India mode, sleep and climate. It’s harder to relax than you think, once you relax don’t feel guilty. Preplanned holidays with cooking lessons, yoga classes, house boats, ashrams, treatments, sightseeing, trekking and little time, can defeat the purpose of your vacation. Listen to your human needs first and then your travel guide, be gentle on yourself, watch some sunrises and sunsets, then decide....

Yoga and meditation is divine, everyone can and should practice no matter what age, physique or condition. It’s an incredible life science with unlimited health and spiritual rewards originated in India, not a fashion trend. To reap the benefits of yogic science, early to bed and early to rise, eat mainly vegetarian, avoid alcohol and attend regular classes for at least one week, to become addicted. It will have positive affect on your life. Make sure you chose a genuine and experienced yogi master.

Ayurveda is natural ancient wisdom from the root of India. If you are willing to discipline yourself; serious illnesses, weight loss, stress, trauma, skin diseases… can be cured. But it requires time and effort from you, as much as the doctor; a serious treatment will take over your holiday. If you are on a caution to the wind holiday, simply chose some basic rejuvenation massages to feel great and relaxed. It’s not normal practice to have women massage men or men massage women in Ayurveda, unless done under doctor’s supervision. The price will determine the quality of the treatment, oils and tonics used.

It is highly recommended to do serious long term treatments and yoga/meditation training in the monsoon. The body naturally releases its hidden aches and pains due to the humid climate. Therefore easier to identify and cure with the ayurvedic treatments. The monsoon is low tourist season, economical, peaceful, warm melancholic atmosphere, ideal for reading, writing, thinking, improving your health and spiritual wellbeing.

The Bohemian Masala “live and let live” account, we donate affordable amounts to this when ever possible. These funds go directly to support persons who are involved in building or running this village. We have witnessed desperation with medical emergency, operations, medication, accidents, treatments, funerals needs and no means to afford it. This need is something Bohemian Masala has to face up to as a business. You are welcome to support as our guest.

We have many dreams and will add them like spices until the Masala taste divine - so keep watching this space. This concept will keep evolving - so we shall continue to express our bohemian thoughts and intentions on this page, please feel free to contact us for any reason…
